One difficulty that occurs with car covers is properly tying the cover down. Since strong gusts can effectively lift the cover up and off, a few tips can help prevent your car cover from becoming your neighbor's new pool cover:
- Use a lock and cable.
- Use tie downs. Pick a car cover with has "corner straps". These straps are designed to wrap around each tire in the corner. For some models, there is a strap in the front and the back, designed to hookup across the width of the vehicle. This is by far the most secure method. There are also accessorial tie downs, which either clamp onto the cover or require the cover to have a small incision
- Location, location, location. Know your area, and park your car accordingly. Right up against the house on a side not prone to wind can work well - but be aware of the way the wind moves.
